AR15 mods for reliability
The majority of AR series rifle malfunctions have to do with magazines or actual broken parts , up to 80% of malfunctions. Mike Pannone has posted many great articles about simple operator level fixes which turn a good rifle into a great rifle. link
What this article has stated is the AR primarily needs a stronger buffer spring, either the BLUE which he recommends or the RED in carbine lengths from HERE Sprinco. In addition to the H2 buffer assembly increases the force closing the bolt, and forces the bolt carrier to travel through fouling in a dirty upper receiver. The BCM 4 coil, or a SOPMOD 5 coil spring under the extractor with the Crane O ring increases reliability in extraction and removes the issues encountered with cases sticking in the chamber.
The SOPMOD bolt Upgrade Kit which is occasionally available contains all the parts in the bolt carrier assembly for all of these modifications.
“I reliably fired 2400 rounds (80 magazines) on a bone dry gun, and I would bet that is a lot more than any soldier or other armed professional will ever come close to firing without any lubrication whatsoever. So, disregard the fouling myth and install a better buffer spring, H2 buffer, enhanced extractor spring and a Crane O-ring (all end user drop-in parts). With normal (read “not excessive”) lubrication and maintenance, properly-built AR-15/M4 type rifles with carbine gas systems will astound you with their reliability and shootability.” Mike Pannone in the linked article
All of the above mods can be done with the Fail-Zero kit which has what they call Exo-coat making a permanent dry lubrication of the working parts. As they say anyway.
H2 buffer The heavier buffer has been shown as a key factor in improving reliability in the AR series rifles
I own Colt M4 rifles and I will be modding them in this fashion as soon as Amazon delivers. I hope to have a detailed report for this mod and any issues or observations I make.
The best change you can make is buying a good magazine instead of the swap meet bucket of old GI mags we all buy at some point when we get an AR. And good ammunition not the generic we all buy when its on sale as mystery ammo.
With these modifications done easily by the end user, and good magazines and ammunition your AR is every bit as reliable as any other rifle. You can trust it.
